Explosion Info?
I finally got to Cascade and Porter after avoiding the parking and crowd issues. A Friday morning after leaf season helped on both accounts, in fact I had complete solitude atop Cascade (my friend is afraid of heights and the openness unnerved her so she waited near treeline), and two of us enjoyed a long, quiet lunch on Porter.
While on Porter we heard and actually felt an explosion that had us speculating what could have caused it and wonder if anyone could confirm or deny our many guesses. The most plausible I have is gravel mining or blasting rock at a construction job. It happened at 12:06 pm Friday, came from the west/northwest. |

Maybe some blasting over at Mt. Van Hoevenberg? I know there were some trail closures over there this summer as they were blasting.

Military aircraft are not normally allowed to exceed the speed of sound unless in an area so designated. There are no such areas over the Adirondacks for routine training, although jet fighter training can often be seen and heard on certain days. However, sometimes during certain maneuvers the speed limit can be broken "by accident", and is usually of no great consequence. A sonic boom can often be identified by its double boom character. You get one boom from the aircraft nose and second from the leading edge of the wings or the tail... in a very rapid boom-boom, that may blend into a single sound, depending on geometry. I was in southern California one time near LA when I was excited to hear the double boom of the Space Shuttle as it descended for a landing at Edwards AFB, far to the east of me.

agree with Wldrns, probably not a sonic boom, as they come in pairs and depending on the conditions can often be heard over a very wide area. Earlier this year in the UK a RAF Typhoon was scrambled from RAF Conningsby to escort an airliner with a disruptive (drunk) passenger back into Stanstead, booms were report over a large area .
I was in Wells on Friday, didn't hear anything like a sonic boom, although it was last day of the muzzle loading season. (just saying ![]()

Yes they have done several blastings on the construction job on Mt Vanhovenberg. I have a friend working there. It’s a over 100 million dollar job building stuff for the up coming world games. Paving cross country ski trails etc..

We have a camp in the Blue Mountain Lake area and have heard these several times over the years, seemingly coming from west of our location, and extremely loud. Loud enough to shake the building and startle the heck out of me.
I'm certain they weren't sonic booms.

Maybe related to these recent occurrences? Never heard any definitive conclusion about what these were. |

Not so many years ago living in Lowville, we could often hear cannon fire training coming from Fort Drum. In more recent years I have heard the same while as far away as Cranberry and Lows Lakes. Not terribly loud, definitely a far off rumbling sound like distant thunder, but still very distinct and confusing to the uninitiated when the sky was clear and no threat of bad weather.

Ref: Ft. Drum - My brother was stationed and/or worked there from 2000-2017. Before he joined a camp in the Northern Adirondacks he hunted the base, and I went with him a number of times there. One Sunday morning they started training in an area that seemed closer than it was. I was making a small drive to him when the rocket fire started. It was wild and sounded like it was right next to us.
As for the start of this thread, I would guess Mt. Van Ho

When it happened my first response was Ft. Drum is too far away. It was overcast with clouds around 6000' so we wouldn't have been able to see any aircraft, but it really seemed like an explosion.
