I never use the check mark. Instead, we log our time entering, and our time leaving the trail. We also use military time. My wife and I are career public safety personnel, so we put a high value on timelines in any situation. Personally, I would love to see In/Out columns for time entries.

You'll be pleased to know the trail-register for the Adirondack Mountain Reserve (Ausable Club) has two columns for entering the start and finish time. For awhile they had a wristwatch attached to the logbook (but it's no longer there).

The Lake George Land Conservancy includes In and Out columns in their registers as well.
