Bald Mountain fire tower vr pano

Is anyone sure what scale the topo on the table is? I can embed a click-able detail photo of it, if i can get the same map to work with.

We really like this hike with the dog. This time we only saw 2 other people during the hike, it was nice to have the tower to ourselves for this shoot.

Bald Mountain Fire Tower

enjoy

On a somewhat interesting note, where the "topo table" in the center is there used to be an "Osborne fire finder". Osborne also invented a swing lens panoramic camera to be used in conjunction with the fire finder. NY liked it and had full 360 panos made from every fire tower!
If I could find those images I could turn them into interactive panos to be viewed along with my current one showing then and now.
It would be pretty neat to do.

bvr,

Incredible photo. Thanks for sharing. Regarding the historical panos, check with the NY State Archives in Albany. They have an extensive collection of aerial photographs and may have the fire tower pictures. I think their catalog is online and searchable.

Here is a 1923 view from Goodenow Fire Tower looking northeast toward Mt. Marcy that I found on the NYS Archives website. I think there are other fire tower pictures in the NYS College of Forestry record group.

Gatorman,
Thanks for the lead. Here is an Osborne image.

3 of these were taken at each firetower. Each one covers 120.
I will search the idea you have given me
thanks

A very interesting view! 360 VR panorama

I'll just post it into this thread so I'm not making a mess of the forum.

It had not occurred to me when I shot the other pano to shoot one of these.
Last weekend I drove up to paddle the Moose and shoot this but mother nature had other ideas.
I drove up this weekend through that crazy storm, dodging downed power-lines and trees. I had a tough time getting to sleep..the noise of cracking trees over the wind and rain were something.
The hike was great as always, there were a few downed trees from the previous evening.

Anyways, the good stuff..
I got to shoot this!

Bald Mountain Fire Tower - *look down!*

On another note...there is now a memorial to a soldier at the west leg of the tower.

and..I got to see a mountain rescue! Some girl rolled her ankle and had to be carted off the mountain! --- Thanks go to the Old Forge fire dept for the rescue! They worked their a$$es of getting her over the downed trees.

ps. I "stashed" a magnetic sticker somewhere on the trail. The inspiration came from someone on the forums avatar. If you like kayaking and are planning on hiking Bald anytime soon, and have a good sense of humor. Send me a PM and I'll tell you where it is. First come first serve, I only had one extra one with me.
