As a heads up...you can do a dual install. That is make a partition for a second OS. My sister said though (and I need to clarify WHY) that for some reason vista/XP dual installs don't work as smoothly as say NT or Windows 2000 and XP dual installs.
My computer is broken down into many smaller virtual drives. What this does, is prevents a virus (generally), or a corrupt OS from causing a complete HD loss without a lot of effort.
Basically with virtual drives (partitions) if you need to format the OS drive you only lose whats on that. I realized what I did was pretty smart when I had a windows crash. I called Microsoft tech and talked with a whole bunch of pretty knowledgable people. In the end, after about 4 hours, they told me what I already knew, FORMAT!!! There was no way to reinstall in my case without a format.
But the HP installed Vista was awful. The new "Dell" Ultimate Vista is seemingly stable and does work well. Computer seems faster as well. FWIW the HP Vista was the original batch of laptops to leave the factory with Vista installed in Jan 2007 so I assume something happened during an update to corrupt a file and crash Vista.
