Owls head Mt. - Keene - Update

The landowners on the approach to Owls Head have apparently decided that last year's weekday only access was manageable and have decided to continue that policy this year.

We will continue to work on a permanent solution that will permit complete access, but at least the mountain isn't shut off altogether. For those who do arrive on a weekend unaware that the trail is closed, we are also working on a sign that directs people to similar alternatives.

Both the trail and the road? This would mean that one can't park on the highway and walk in.

Yes, on weekends one can neither drive in nor use the trail. On weekdays, one must still park near the road, but the trail is open.

Great news, thanks for sharing.

Trail is closed between 4 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Monday.

Great little trail to test the attitude and conditioning of guests you bring to the park. Based on the results, you can plan your hikes for the rest of the trip.

In the case of my Mom, she spent the whole week building up to Owls Head!

But she did it and even got the patch.

I seem to recall signage reflecting this last year ...

However, when we hiked it Mon May 21st this year the signs simply said no parking between 4 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Monday. No indication that parking at the trailhead was not allowed.

I have told the Supervisor of the Town of Keene that the signage at Owls Head is currently inadequate to alert potential hikers to this year's reality. I drove by on the highway today and noticed a new sign at the entrance to Owls Head Lane, but didn't stop to read it. Maybe that is the "missing piece", but I also wanted a sign that provided information on nearby alternatives for those arriving on a weekend when the mountain is closed. Supposedly the DEC has to review my alternatives before that sign can be placed. I'll continue to monitor the situation.

There is finally a sign at the highway stating the current situation In my view not the best way a sign could have been made, but here is a photo of that sign.

Second try at a link to the sign.
