All peregrine routes open

Just received the following from Joe Racette at DEC:

Rock climbing routes on the Upper Washbowl Cliff at Chapel Pond will open effective July 30, 2010. With this update, all rock climbing routes in the Adirondacks are now open. Nesting success in the Adirondacks has been lower than the last few years, with only 8 successful nests producing a total of 20 fledglings this year. Thank you climbers for your cooperation in protecting peregrine falcon nests near closed climbing routes, and for reporting your peregrine falcon observations at these and other locations.

I also would like to note that this year I have observed an increase in fixed anchor bolts at several cliffs in the Adirondacks, including new bolts placed in close proximity to the eyrie ledge at two locations. I urge climbers to exercise discretion in placing new anchor bolts, and to refrain from bolting routes during the nesting season (April-July) at cliffs with active peregrine nesting.

Thanks again to climbers and volunteer monitors for your cooperation in continuing the success of the peregrine falcon restoration program in NY.
