Moose Pond, High Peaks Wilderness, Newcomb - 2/7/15

The wife and I did a nice XC ski today to Moose Pond in Newcomb. We parked at the great camp Santanoni trailhead and followed that trail for 2.2 miles before bearing left on a unbroken trail for 4.7 miles to Moose Pond.

The trail follows an old jeep road the entire way and the grade is easy for skiing. It was tiring breaking trail, but our dog Rev helped with that.

14.3 miles round trip. Nobody else was out on this trail, and we only saw 4 people on the trail to the great camp.

Great snow conditions.

More details and pics here.

Thanks for sharing,
Has anyone done a circumnavigation of Newcomb lake and Moose pd in winter?
I know the trail between the two is not much for skiing, but what about the wetlands? (this would probably require a more favorable snow pack though)

I've done it a couple of times, but it's been a few years. I went out to Moose Pond first, took the cut-over trail to the west end of Newcomb Lake, and skied across the lake to the camp. Then back on the main access road, of course.

Going across the lake was nice, and certainly nicer than following the trail. But, it does give you pause to think when you hear the ice groan!
