Removing dog from trap
I thought there might be forum members who would be interested in this video on how to remove a dog from a conibear trap. One of my friends was walking her dog on leash on a trail and her dog's muzzle was caught in a trap that was set right on the side of the trail. The dog's jaw was fractured and he lost several teeth. (Her dog was caught in one of those steel leg-hold type of traps.)
Anyway, I hope you never need to do it, but here's how if it happens. https://vimeo.com/84344143?fbclid=Iw...wbNNn1nkZSAeIA Kathy |

I used to use conibear traps for woodchuck control around the garden on our farm. The kids were instructed never to go near them, especially if there was something caught in them. One early spring, while tilling the garden, I found a trap I neglected to take in for the winter. Right away I reminded both boys about the strict keep away policy. About 5 minutes later I heard the unmistakable zing and clang of a trap being sprung. Our young lab had it around the back of her head and the front of her neck. Unlike the stuffed animal in the video our dog was snarling and biting. I tried to help by fighting the springs to keep her from suffocating but between the biting and my hand strength tiring, things were looking pretty bad. I thought if I put the bars of the trap on her carotid arteries instead of her throat it may knock her out allowing me to get a set of tongs for the springs from a nearby building. She went out so fast I was afraid I wouldn't have time to get the tongs so I tried to explain to my 6 year old what I needed while I kept the tension off. He didn't know what the tongs were, so, with a last ditch try, I was finally able to compress and lock out the springs by hand and get the trap off. Thirty seconds later the dog shook her head, jumped up, ran and joined the kids safely on the porch. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that you would really have to familiarize yourself with these traps BEFORE you have to try and release an animal.

I once caught a NYS Trooper's bloodhound SAR dog in a steel trap, but that's another story.

You'd think that a trapper would have more brains than to set their trap on a trail?

There are some people like me who don't see any trapping as ethical. In my opinion, it as cruel, barbaric, and profoundly lazy.
