Haha I was actually pretty cozy the whole time. I had more layers I didn't even have to put on. It was a great weekend with fantastic weather and company!

Did a solo overnighter along the upper reaches of the Black River. I'm getting too old for this kind of adventure. Takes too much energy. Snow was too deep to gather wood efficiently. Staying warm wasn't a problem but due to chores there wasn't enough time to sit by the fire and talk to the trees.

Built in the early Ď40s by my friendís grandfather, and itís definitely beginning to show itís age, but thankfully JCFarrell (& friends) have been giving it some much needed TLC over the past few winters.
I finally got around to cleaning up the kitchen a bit this past weekend, not sure if you remember from the video, but it was a mess!

quick overnighter

A couple of weekends ago, I decided to test out my new sled.

I picked some nearby state land close to my house. I figured if my new bag configuration wasn't up to snuff, I could always hike back out if need be. I didn't get too far. Only a half mile into the woods. Let me just say that it was my first experience with a pulk (Jet Sled JS1), and pulling it through the woods the day after we got a foot of fresh powder was like pulling an upside-down volkswagen beetle down a gravel road barefoot. I also had a new mini voile shovel and a gortex bivy to test out. (Shovel: Awesome. Bivy: a little heavy, and perhaps a little clammy. jury is still out) It only got down to about 13 degrees, so it wasn't the 0 degree bag test I was hoping for. I was toasty warm, so it was a pleasant sleep anyway. Still planning to get out someplace "real" toward mid-march when work lightens up a bit, hopefully with a hot tent of some sort. A couple pictures from my mini adventure:

It got better! I needed some extra "test weight" for the sled besides my pack so that's why I hauled a few logs from my wood pile. I regretted it immediately, but it was nice to have some dry base wood for the fire.
