The pvc perimeter to the longer kid's sled adds a lot of stiffening which lessens the tendency to tip over because it allows a tighter rope tie over the top of any carried gear. Otherwise a tight top rope squeezing the sides will tend to round the sled bottom, making it unstable with a high CoG.
