I loved working with Dropping Mercury Electrodes in the 70's; it was lots of fun messing with big pools of the stuff. Later on I spent many years trying to figure out why every darn thing in nature we looked at had positive hits for mercury, I thought it was all background because I couldn't find anything without it anymore (meaning I couldn't find a sediments, fish, etc without detectable levels of mercury, or PCBs for that matter, unless they were from a hatchery with filtered water). The behavioral data is interesting, particularly where the loons are wholly uninterested in caring for their young. I don't really care for childcare myself; I blame the 70's and those dropping mercury electrodes.
