Sad news: Wanakena General Store to close ~October 15, 2015

The Wanakena General Store will close on or around October 15, 2015. As things stand now, this will be a permanent closing. Thanks to Rick Kovacs and Angie Oliver for giving the store a 5 year reprieve when the previous owner could no longer do it.

If you're planning to do the Cranberry Lake 50, or any other hikes in the Wanakena area, keep this in mind. Here's a link to an article about it.

In other news, and to end on a positive note:
It is hoped that the Wanakena footbridge will be completed by the end of next year.

Sorry to see this happen. I remember it when Dave Z. ran it. Nice place, lots of selection for a little store.

Good news! Some food and drink available at former store

The former Wanakena General Store is now reopened under new management as "Otto's Abode". It's kind of an art gallery and music venue, but they have basic packaged snacks (candy, pretzels, hot coffee, and a small assortment of drinks.
They may have maps, and maybe a hiking item or two.
