Trail clearing - NPT southern trailhead to Rock LAKE May 6, 2007

http://www.backcountryheritage.com/where.htm

There will be more activities over the summer, but until the Backcountry Heritage resolves the (unexpected) problematic incorporation with the State, funding is scarce so projects will not be very aggressive.

If any of the folks involved with other organizations (like the ADK Club, AARCH, lean-to rescue) want to drop us a line we may be able to assist in your existing projects while we get our own internal legal stuff finished.

As always, we're looking for volunteers and are slowly building a list of interested people and organizations. We will be emailing new events and other announcements using this list, so if you think you're going to be inserested in helping now or later please drop us a line.

Just a reminder that this event is 9 days away. Most likely we'll be meeting at a designated time early Sunday at the southern start of the NPT. Please email if interested.

Benson to Rock Lake trail maintenance May 6th

Meet at the Benson Trailhead at 8:30am.

Since this is an official ADK Mtn Club (Schenectady Chapter) maintenance project, there is a "sign in" sheet for all participants ... this will provide everyone with Workmen's Compensation while performing the trail work.

We'll be cleaning up any smaller blowdown on the trail and cleaning out drainage along the trail. Any large blowdown will be reported to the DEC for future cleanup.

This will probably be an all day project with lunch at Rock Lake. There are several water crossings along the way.

If you have any tools to bring, please let me know (garden hoe, lopers, hand saws, etc.).

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to PM me!!

thanks ...

kwc (the other Kevin)

Trailwork completed!!

Many thanks to Gary (wildernessphoto), Bryan (whitefoot), Sergei (dog), Kevin, Valerie, Ken M., and Norm M. (the latter two from Schenectady ADK) for all of their help today ... and Judy (boreal chickadee) too!

the trail was surprisingly dry, and the water crossings were fine. Gary's axe took care of some heavy duty blowdown on the trail and Sergei's saw handled another smaller tree across the trail. There are still a couple larger trees across the trail that were too large for us to handle today.

Rock Lake was as beautiful as ever under bright blue skies and a warm sun.

Redhawk, Val and I were going to stop up afterwards but I was just too tired.

Ended up coming home and sleeping for 11 hours instead.

I had a great time. I ended up doing some rock and small boulder moving on my own (just kinda the way it happened). I felt like a grown kid playing in the mud with purpose. Now to see if my 'repairs' made a difference when we come back for the Fall sweep. I know on the way out Val used 2 out of the 3 rocks I placed at one water crossing.

Thanks to Kevin C for organizing this and Gary for a place to hang out Saturday.

Thanks Serguei for posting the pictures. I had forgotten my camera in the car.

There was obviously some great company at Gary's the night before!

Thats my hand picture as well. It shows my wedding band. I guess all that female fan mail will stop now.

OK, I'll say it the way I see it.

Kevin you look like a french poodle with his face and hands shaved begging (Val?) for food or something.

It's a great picture.

It just shows you how much fun we had.
