How about adding something like, "and ziploc bags to carry out used t.p." ?

I'm splitting off the discussion on feces and TP that started up on another thread.

Not in the Eastern Zone of the High Peak Wilderness. Fires are prohibited.

Fire notwithstanding, LNT doesn't advocate burning it either...

Just be glad they don't require WagBag's yet like some of the places out West do.

You're suppose to dig a small hole and cover it back over. In theory this allows mother nature to break down that waste faster than if it was left sitting on top of a log in the shade.

I don't think the areas with the heaviest traffic in the ADKs come close to some of the least visited National Parks out west. I also think there's other factors at play which forced them into mandating such things. That's one item I don't see becoming regulated in the ADKs. And if you've ever been out West you know why people from all over the world flock there (it really is that much more awe inspiring).

If we all want to talk poop then maybe there's another thread in the making?

One of the reasons you must pack it out out-west is because of the desert climate, the poop and TP never break down, there isn't enough moisture for the microbes to do their thing,...it just drys out...hence the smear and spread method....

On the poop topic: Another reason carrying feces out is required out west because of the lack of soils that add a purifying aspect to watersheds. In the Adirondacks, if you bury your poop properly, it stays there, and is broken down, and there is no worry about bacteria or what not entering into water bodies downstream.

However, out west, there is no soil to bury poop in, and if and when it rains, the material is just going to be carried downstream, in which case the bacteria can quite easily enter into water bodies.

Side note: I've been told that one of the proper ways to dispose of human waste above tree line where there is no soil to bury it in is to spread it out into a thin paste on an exposed rock. This allows UV rays of the the sun to cook it, killing bacteria within.

Side note #2: One of the most LNT places to pee is right on the trail. It minimizes the impact.

The smear technique. I've done it several times. Not a good idea to attempt it while defecating. It is best to wait until the feces are no longer a part of you.

Never do this right on the summit and do your best for a south-facing smear.

As for TP. I never use it.

What do the bears and coyotes and deer do?

Take a ride through farm country in spring, summer, fall, even winter. You know what that smell is? Future tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, etc.

Here is how you make a tomato: Mix some poop with some water and sunshine and tomato seeds, then wait until the poop turns into a juicy ripe tomato. Bon appetite

Do people take this WagBag on long Backpacking trips? Is it not awkward to carry the waste around with you? Does one just dispose of it in a waste can or empty it into a toilet when obtainable?

The subject of Out Houses and outdoor deficating is a topic that I think about a bit. I was not impressed with the conditions of some of the "filled to the brim" out houses that I came across last summer on the NPT.

Once used and sealed, one need not open them, or think about them (other than where to stow them). The few times I've had the pleasure were out west, and we carried the bags out and put them in a receptacle at the ranger station, as required by regulation. Rather convenient, really. Disposal was much more convenient than actually using the bags!

A friend of mine used the following technique... after a week-long rafting trip with a large group, he put all the bags into a television box that he had waiting in the back of his pickup. Then he went shopping at the mall. When he came back to his truck the television box was gone.

Some people use a long piece of PVC with screw cap ends to store the used WagBag's...

Continued fermentation of feces in an enclosed receptacle can lead to increased pressures that often result in a rapid release with catastrophic results resembling feces and PVC shrapnel...
