Official "Climbing the 46" Thread & Poll
Our old thread and poll is now closed because it's become out-dated. This is the replacement. I've added a few multiple choice selections

Winter/Non-Winter
I have 23 done in the winter and one, Marcy done as the state high point in non-winter. I don't think I will be doing the high peaks in non-winter. Can I still get a 46er patch when I finish my winter peaks or do I only get a winter rocker?

Before I am too old?
I have 20 of the 46. Perhaps, before I am too old, I will complete the dream. It's the distance and the other thing, life, that get in the way most often! Alas!
Sledding the 46? I might try Saucering the 46 as welll!

Thanks Dick, did some scrounging around (following links from that thread) and found that the herd path is about half a mile past Hunter Pond heading towards Duck Hole. You can clearly see the drainage on the latest WGS84 topo. It actually doesn't sound too bad, so maybe someday I will actually climb it.

I've done 11 plus MacNaughton. Slowly but surely I plan on finishing. I have no idea when I'll actually finish...
We did MacNaughton from the Duck Hole trail side, mostly travelling in the brook. It was not a really bad whack after the top of the brook. Last edited by jbrown; 07-05-2006 at 01:29 PM.. |

I've climbed MacNaughton 3 times, all from the Upper Works/Hunter Pond side. It's a nice, fairly easy hike, reminds me a lot of Marshall via Herbert Brook, with a lot of rock slabs in the brook to walk on. The herd path above the brook is fairly obvious, although it didn't seem much more obvious from 1990 to 1999. Not much of a view, but here's a pic from the summit
