DEC Issues Muddy Trail Advisory for Adirondack High Peaks

Full Press Release

May 10, 2017: New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) urges hikers to be cautious and postpone hikes on trails above 2,500 feet until high elevation trails have dried and hardened.

The Backcountry Information page for the High Peaks Region is still recommending that hikers carry snowshoes and microspikes above 3,500 feet but I assume that page will update shortly to align with the press release.

Muddy trail advisory lifted

MUDDY TRAIL ADVISORY LIFTED:

Hikers may once again hike trails above 2,500 feet without causing significant damage to the trails and sensitive alpine vegetation. Hikers are reminded that the trails may still be muddy in some locations and they are encouraged to walk through the mud not around it trails to protect vegetation and prevent further erosion of trails. DEC appreciates those hikers who respected the Muddy Trails Advisory and chose to refrain from hiking in the high elevations these past weeks and encourages all hikers to abide by Leave No Trace principles.
