Stillwater Fire Tower

Looking for any information in regards to access for the Stillwater fire tower. Through my research, it looks like the TH was supposed to moved and a partial reroute. I saw some information leading me to believe that this was partially done. I believe that it is still accessible due to easement. Any information is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Just as a follow up for anyone that stumbles across this thread. My son and I were able to hike it. I spoke with the ranger for the area first. Officer Evans, I believe. He was very pleasant and helpful. There is new trail flagged, but not finished. It starts a tenth or 2 farther down the road than the old trail. We lost the "trail" at one point, so it turned into a bit of a whack. The top half of the trail is the same as the old trail. The tower itself is "under restoration" and should NOT be climbed. There were no views from the summit and we did not find any other view points. It's just over 1 mile with about 500 feet of gain to the summit.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there has been forward progress. It didn't appear that anything had been done in quite some time. I wish I lived closer, so I could help.
Leonard Hill on the other hand is only about an hour away. So, if it is ever fortunate enough to receive restoration, sign me up!

Restoration in the works

A new stewardship group joining with DEC was formed 7/27/15, with much greater DEC investment than occurred with the group that started in 2009 and fizzled. Wahoo!

I am coordinating, and will use ADK Forum and Facebook to try and keep those interested in the loop.

I live at Stillwater, and my wife's family ties here go back to 1901, before the first concrete dam was constructed. We WILL see this through!

Contact from those who may be able to pitch in is welcomed.

That is great news BRFvolpe! Stillwater remains one of my favorite places, I have been going there for 35 years and would love to see this happen. Thank you!

Work days to renovate Stillwater Fire Tower on 9/26 and 10/3/15. It'll be peak of the autumn color. Stay overnight at Stillwater Hotel, work with us Saturday, and rent a canoe or kayak at the Stillwater Shop Sunday. Email FSFT@frontier.com, or "Like" Friends of Stillwater Fire Tower on Facebook for more info.

I haven't been on this forum for 3 mo. Thanks all you guys for your support. We had a great opening on July 2nd, and lots of visitors through the summer. We had 250-300 for our opening, and averaged 50 hikers a week thru Labor Day. Met Cold River Bob up to the tower yesterday who's a member of this forum.

Tomorrow 9/12/16, we're setting a replacement marker of Verplanck Colvin't 1882 Station 77 marker that was stolen from the summit decades ago and discovered by Iraq War Vet Kyle Kristiansen in 2013 ... in NJ! Look us up in on the Adirondack Almanack or the Sept/Oct. issue of Adirondack Explorer.

As a note of information, the Fire Tower trail is closed until December 20, 2016. We drove all the way there yesterday because it was a beautiful day, only to find it was closed. We guessed it was because of hunting season.

Thanks.

What is Big Moose Road like during the winter? Plowed/passable?
