Auger Falls, SPWA, 6 May, 2017

Today was a great day to take my youngest daughter on a "Snack by a Stream" hike. I could think of no better place to go than Auger Falls in the Siamese Ponds Wilderness Area. In the past few years, the State has done a great job of marking the entrance to this destination and it's huge parking lot . The signs on Route 30 and a new trailhead sign guide hikers to this dramatic location.

Walking down the old road, we dodged a few puddles and quickly turned left into the woods, signing in at the well used register.

The trail zigged and zagged for a few minutes. It was well marked with yellow disks and the foot tread was very obvious.

We soon passed our favorite hemlock; the peek-a-boo tree. It's always a favorite photo stop. Good memories.

Along the trail, we stopped to notice a couple different types of trillium blooming.

Thanks to the inch of rain we got yesterday, we could hear the falls long before we could see them. Our first glimpse of all that water being forced through the gorge was absolutely amazing. Even though I've been here dozens of times, I'm constantly awed by the power of water.

After a quick snack of some chips and the last of the Easter candy, we headed upstream to the 90 turn in the river bed. Here, the Sacandaga River takes a hard right before plunging down this 100'+ cascade.

Soon enough, it was time to head back to the parking area and get to the cabin for lunch. We met a few people and a nice golden-doodle on our walk today. A far cry from what we'll see here on a busy summer weekend. Although it was gray and dark out, the rain held off and we enjoyed another great trip to Auger Falls.
