Snowshoeing at Boreas Ponds

So I was thinking of going to snowshoe up at Boreas Ponds tomorrow but I'm having trouble to find up to date information about what is available. Specifically do you have to park on Blue Ridge Road or can you go up Gulf Brook Road to park there? Is Gulf Brook Road plowed? If so, how far from any Gulf Brook Rd parking to the ponds? Just trying to get an idea of what to expect. Thank you.

According to the November 21 NYSDEC Outdoor Recreation Bulletin, "Vanderwhacker Mountain Wild Forest/Boreas Ponds Tract: Due to the recent snowfall, Gulf Brook Road is closed. It will reopen at the end of the spring mud season. "

No ice yet, or if there is it is very thin. Def. enough snow to ski/snowshoe in, but I would not get on ponds even if there is ice- very thin

I haven’t been there during winter yet, but I definitely recommend exploring more than just the roads & dam area.

Drove past Gulf Brook Road on the way to Upper Works Saturday. At that time parking only on the shoulder of the highway.

Had Gulf Brook road been plowed up the hill in winter to the gate?

Also with recent warm temperatures I suspect crust covered snow. The walk down the road might not be especially pleasant.

I took a closer look on Saturday. Can confirm that the parking is on Blue Ridge Rd. No evidence of any tracks on the road since last week's snow, nor is there evidence that the previous snowfalls had been plowed. I didn't "break trail" up to the register to see what use might have been recorded earlier.

My experience has been that often when DEC says something will happen, it might not, or not as fast as they said, but if they say something will not happen, it is not happening!

GB was not plowed last year. Don't recall if they plowed the parking lot at the end of the road or not. Would be nice if they did...

I saw on the lean2rescue Facebook page today the news & photos of the “BIG” handicapped accessible lean-to they are building for the Boreas Ponds Tract.

Not sure. Probably where the lodge was, near the new thunderbox that was installed this past year behind the clearing.
