  • New Skiing Forum

As with our other specific activity forums, we have decided to add a spot dedicated to skiing. This is probably over due, but hopefully timely as winter is here. We can use this forum to describe ski trips, plan group trips group, and any other skiing related topic.

    Thanks

As a frequent XC and BC skier - I have long hoped for such a specific forum and I will be a regular contributor (and reader).

I did get out to enjoy a few miles at Kinns Rd park in Clifton Park, NY yesterday. Snow cover was fine but with the warm temp and falling fine snow being nearly rain, there was some "clumping" happening on my waxless skis. Had to spray the WD40 a few times. That's a tip to prevent sticking moist snow that I assume works on snowshoes as well as skis. You can buy small cans at most hardware stores. Less expensive than the single use Teflon pads sold at ski shops.

Here is a link for one of the web sites I look at to see where the good snow is surrounding the NY Capital district http://weathernet6.wrgb.com/rain_snow_list.asp The more widely known snow depth chart here: http://www.erh.noaa.gov/nerfc/graphi...snow_depth.htm

Hoping to get out a few more times over this weekend.

      Thanks Bob,
For all the Central New Yorkers here is the link to trail conditions for the Onondaga County Parks. FWIW Highland Forest is a great place to ski and conditions are pretty good right now.
"Climbing is about freedom. There's no prize money; there are no gold medals. The mountains are all about going there to do what you want to do. That's why I'll never tell anyone else how to climb. All I can say is, This is how I prefer to do it."

could we merge those other weather sites to be here for the winter..they are scattered all over the place.

Here is something for any of you going to ski the Whites this winter.

We were going up to Hermit Lake but the avalanche danger is considerable. Most of the snow got blown off the top of the Presidential Range in 100 mph winds yesterday..and its now in the old glacial cirques.

Is it common for the Jackrabbit link to not be updated often..the report is over a week old.

          Thanks

Thanks for the new forum. I hope to get do some XC in the ADK this winter.
For Central and Western NY, I would recommend Harriet Hollister Spencer SP, by Hemlock Lake. I skied there Xmas morning and the conditions were already decent.
