Unhappy The Adirondacks lose a piece of its history.

I just received word that the main barn at Camp Santanoni burned to the ground yesterday (7/13/04). The building was fully engulfed when the fire department arrived. All they could do was protect the surrounding woods and building.

Sorry but this is all the info I have at this time.

I strongly urge everyone to visit some of the historic sites that are scattered throughout the park, because it is never known how long they will last.

What is FYAO IV? This is the first building one would see when going in to the Preserve on the right about .9 miles from the start. It was a neat old building with stalls for milking the cows. It's a shame to lose it. Here's a couple of pics:

FYAO IV (Freeze Your A$$ Off 4) was a backpacking trip that we did this past February with people from another forum at Newcomb Lake.

There is going to be an article about the fire that will be run in today’s "Adirondack Daily Enterprise." I have a copy of the article that was emailed to me. I will try and post it tomorrow, as I don't want to infringe on any copywriter laws

Terrible loss. I guess if you have to find something good it's that the other buildings were spared.

I have a copy of the article form the Adirondack Daily Enterprise about the fire. If anyone would like a copy please PM me and leave an email address that I can send it to as it is too large for me to post to the forum. I’ll be out of town this weekend, but I will try and be as prompt with a response as possible.

I was at the Santanoni Preserve for this first time last Saturday (7/10). What a beautiful place. The barn was amazing. I was also there on Wednesday (7/14) and saw the remains still smoldering. It was an incredibly sad sight.

Hopefully it was accidental. I would hate to think that anyone would stoop so low as to burn a piece of history like that.

Zac, you get pics of the barn on FYAO IV?

Here is a stock photo of the barn from my office that was taken during the summer of '02 while we were taking field measurements and condition assessments.

The second photo is what is left after the fire.
