Lake Placid, ever in search of a new marketing opportunity, jumped at the chance to request the 12946 zip code.

But then Keene said "hang on, four of them thar peaks are under 4000 feet." They snatched up the 12942 zip code.

Of course Keene Valley was not to be outdone, especially by Keene, so they pointed out that MacNaughton had been omitted from the original list of 4000 footers. They grabbed the 12943 zip code.

Or so the story goes.

FWIW the ZIP codes within a three digit (e.g. "129..") region are generally assigned alphabetically.

I agree that Random Scooter's story had me chuckling. Much more creative than mere alphabetization.
