Spring Fishing

I will be coming into the St. Regis Wilderness Canoe Area first week of April for some spring fishing. Our group usually sets up on one of the sites off Floodwood Road and day trips from there. I read that the campsites along Floodwood and at Hoel pond will be closed. Anybody know if they are still open this year?

RE: Spring fishing

I was surfing the net and checking web cams to see the ice conditions on the ponds like Hoel and came across an article in the local paper about closing campsites in the Saranac Wild Lakes region. That led me to the link below from the DEC. There are many other references to the closing of campsites, parking areas...as well as creating new sites and upgrading boat launch sites on the DEC site.

Thank you david. I did read a report on closing campsites but most had to deal with Follensby clear pond in specific. They have old sites that have been grandfathered in but do not meet the law requirements such as distance from one another or specifically the island lean to not having a outhouse because nowhere on the island is there a spot the min distance from the shoreline required to put one. They are closing the lean to sight and a large number of the tent sites as they cycle them out of commission. They will be making a few new if im not mistaken but nowhere near the amounts that will be closed. Have heard rumors of no parking allowed along roads ever and only in designated areas. Every year my family and I try a few day camping trip as ice out comes and honestly fishing SUCKS. If I where you I would recommend a few weeks later if not a whole month later. Good chance ice will JUST be off the lakes if at all by first week of May.

This link shows their Master Plan:
https://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/lands_fo...lwfumpcamp.pdf
The last few years we have camped the third week of May and got skunked on Horseshoe, Polliwog, Rat pond and a few others. (Admittedly other people were catching on Rat) Posts from the last two years showed good fishing just after ice out. We thought we would try earlier this year. Might be the wrong year to change given the forecast. Still it's better than working.

David...I am always amazed at hearing what the "phone tree rumor mill" cooks up, some of it's pretty wild! Thanks for the info man, your original post kinda eluded to a total closure, and was curious where that sprung up....All good...Yes this summer and henceforth, Floodwood rd will have "designated parking only" and it will be enforced, as requested by the town..I doubt it will happen prior to your arrival You should be good and have your pick of sites along Floodwood and Hoel...So far, everything is locked up (ice) in the canoe area and clearing of portages hasn't happened yet. If I didn't live up here, I'd pilgrimage up for spring fishing, just gotta be loose and willing to bounce around for open water. Good luck, tight lines

I have seen what rat can hold. MONSTER browns but then again i have yet to get any haha. Have done good with a personal best brown at 27 and 1/2 inches on polliwog in middle of august haha. Never do good after ice out usually picks up a month later.
