Question How did the St Regis area acquire it's name?

While in the St Regis Canoe area the last few days with a history buff, I was asked as to how the area, ponds, and mountain that bear the name "St Regis" acquired the name. I've done some searching on the net, but am coming up empty. Can anyone clue me in? Thanks!
