Hadley - "Dear David"

Does anyone know the history of the "Dear David" sign near the top of Hadley Mountain? I was up there this past weekend and saw it. The trail was a bit icy and microspikes are highly recommended.

After you make it up to the ridge and turn right, it's about halfway to the tower.

I climbed Hadley last May and I don't think the sign was there then.

Sign was still up today, I looked around nearby but could find no clues as to its purpose.

We've also been there numerous times and never saw this. Perhaps a personal memorial of some sort?

It looked pretty new. Like I said, I looked around to see if there was anything else, but didnt see anything. There was enough snow that anything small would have been covered up, though. It's right on the side of the trail, to the east as you follow the ridgeline up to the final ascent up to the summit. The sign is strung on wire between two trees, and there's a large boulder just beyond it, which you can see in the picture.

In this thread, Pat T suggested it might be some sort of message intended for David Patterson... a long shot, but not an unlikely one.

Still there 2/20

The sign is in good shape and suspended on a cable between two trees. No other obvious markings.

I actually hung it back up on Sunday. I was there and looking for it and it was on the ground under some snow. The cable between the two trees was broken. So it's still there, albeit crooked.
