Question Island campsites

Hello all, I've stayed at a few island campsites and was just wondering if you all had any favorites.

Joe Indian Island in Cranberry Lake is one of my favorites. Lots of well spaced campsites, good fishing, and reasonably close to some great hikes.

Are the Indian Lake islands for come first served, or reserved through the campground?

The Indian Lake Island sites are part of the campground and have to be reserved. From my experience, if you want an island site you need to book it pretty far in advance.

The campground operates from mid-May to early October. I believe that in the off season the sites are treated as first come first serve.

Of course the problem with island camp sites is that they are on an island, with limited space and resources. Small islands are a problem in that any campsites are non-conforming if they are less than 150 feet from the water's edge. Those currently existing are likely on the DEC plan to be moved or eliminated. If you plan on having a campfire, legal (dead and down) firewood is generally pretty well picked over and very limited in availability. Expect large unexpected areas of surface or near surface TP flowers and associated odors, even when outhouses are available.

We use to camp on one of the two islands, one island in low water, on Franklin Falls Pond...before they removed the blue bathtub.

Lila yes, but not going to broadcast that over the interweb.

There is only one designated island campsite in the SRCA.

Little Tupper Lake has a couple nice ones.
Big Island on Raquette Lake has a few lean-tos.

Middle and Lower Saranac Lake have MANY island campsites. All have their pros and cons but most are very nice. I particularly like the island site on Weller Pond (Middle Saranac)

There are some nice island sites on Follensby Clear Pond. Although it seems some of them will be closing in the near future.

Valcour Island on Lake Champlain has some nice campsites, although the island is moderately to heavily popular for camping.
