Does anyone know of any cabins that are remote, like to hike or snowshoe into?

cabins or leantos?
as far as leantos go...
Siamese ponds is nice, and fairly flat. Any area in John Browns tract is nice, try the middle branch lake leanto.
if you want an actual cabin, there is a non Adirondack cabin I go to now and then. its on the AT near Manchester VT. The Spruce peak shelter. its full of mice and chipmunks though, so just leave your bag unzipped and hung from the rafters and keep your food safe. I camped there for new years eve during Y2k. We had a good view of the impending apocalypse from up there. We were wagering on whether the lights would all go out in Manchester. No doomsday, but a nice trip anyway.

The only cabins that come to mind are Johns Brook Lodge and Camp Peggy O'Brien. Both require advance reservations, and are hardly "remote" but do require hiking/snowshoeing to get to them.

If your talking about State owned cabins for rent, I'm not aware of any in the Adirondack park. Maybe a private cabin somewhere.
Allegany State park in the western part of the State has them.
Here's a link:
Allegany State park
I believe you can drive to those though...
Maybe someone has info about remote cabins in the 'dacks. I've never heard of any.

Thanks

but, I should have said I was looking for a private cabin. Somewhere to snowshoe into in the winter and be a little more comfortable than my tent or a lean-to. It's hell getting old!!

I know this is an old thread but I thought this was cool. There was an an old lumberjack camp on the back side of Page Mountain (Camp 19) that the State forgot to burn down. I havent been there in years and the last time I saw it the roof was caved in. My father and I always wanted to fix it up a little but I doubt there is much left of it now.

My father also has some cool pictures of camps that were destroyed during the land swap. Some of these camps were back by Pillsbury and Otter Lake.

cabin

There is an old log cabin that you hike into that was built by forest rec students at Paul smiths back in 79 or something off of Keese mills rd. Check with Cathy Fuller who is on staff at PSC in the Rec dept. Buy her a couple of beers and she might give you the locale.

I was told by a friend who hiked up there that it's been torn down. The VIC destroyed it when they bought the land.

Some of the sportsmans clubs on leased lands have camps/cabins that are owned by members. Many are a few miles back from the highways. Some of these clubs are looking for members, as are some of the camps. With that in mind try maybe Finch/Pryun or IP. Alot of the clubs are very quiet in the winter after dear season is over.
