11th Mt E Branch Sacandaga Riv XC 1-26-13

Good quality powder snow but periodic blow down & thin cover made negotiating the trail more difficult than normal. About 12 settled snow off trail, no crust. Trail well packed. Water crossings now all frozen but many not filled in with snow. Made it to lean-to (one occupant) & cable bridge. Thru trail away from LT to 13th lake not obviously broken at fork. Reportedly has been skied thru since last sizeable snow. One couple reported increasing blow down on the trail past the bridge to the ponds.

It was a beautiful sun lit day in the valley a scenic trail along a wide river that is one of my ADK favorites (in winter). In spite of 7 deg. temp at trailhead, the combination of no wind + hand/toe warmers kept us comfortable while active.

The climb up 11th Mt had poor cover/ice so we SSd up then switched to skis. The descent to the river valley was tougher than I remember compounded by the limited snow, + gully like depression at times. Not really recommended before more snow unless you have good control and maneuver well. Metal edges helpful.

I was on my cross country ski's for about an hour today. It wasn't fun when the wind picked up...

Nice report.

Thanks for the conditions report Bob. Given our experience a month ago with stream crossings from the 13th side sounds like a bunch more snow is needed in that world.
