Garden Parking on a Friday

My son and I will be going for a 3 night backpack, planning to park at the Garden lot on a Friday morning. Is it likely to be full then? According to the town web site there's a shuttle from another lot, but only on Sat/Sun.

We're driving in about 4 hours to there (from Ottawa) so if there's a chance it will be full by 10 (when we'd arrive) I'm considering driving in the night before & staying close by.

It typically doesn't ever fill up completely on most weekdays, but Friday is the weekday that it is probably most likely to fill up if it will. 10 am also isn't the best time to be arriving to ensure a spot. I wouldn't necessarily go to the trouble of coming down the night before, but I'd probably try to get their earlier in the morning just to be on the safe side.

The closest legal parking to the Garden in the event that it is full is the municipal lot down in Keene Valley. Overnight parking is permitted there.

Have a good trip! Don't forget your bear canister (they are required by regulation) and remember that campfires are prohibited in the Eastern High Peaks. (EDIT: It sounds like you may be staying on ADK property at JBL, in which case the state land use regulations do not apply. Check with the ADK to see about food storage and campfires.)

Thanks! We're renting a lean-to at JBL, so the cannister's are provided (son's 1st backpacking trip, so I'm trying to keep weight down).

Out of curiosity, IF it is full, what do you recommend for a backup plan? We don't really need to be hiking till afternoon, so I suppose we could wait a while, but where to park if I need to leave son/gear at trailhead?

Kicking myself a bit, I was originally planning to arrive Thurs, but shifted by a day at the last minute.

If you wait, then yes, spots will eventually open up in the afternoon as day hikers leave the woods. You'd bee competing with other groups arriving in the afternoon for weekend overnight trips for it, though. I would park down in the municipal lot in Keene Valley, and treat yourselves to lunch at the Noonmark Diner, and browse the gear selection at the Mountaineer while waiting.

Thanks for the recommendation, always good to have a close-by restaurant. Nothing is better than a burger after a few days of dried food
