Question Primitive No Researve Campsite Near Fulton Chain/Racquette/Follensby Clear Pond

Hello, I'm looking for a resource for finding primitive camping sites that are no reserve. We've loved Alger Island and Follensby Clear Pond but are looking for a drive-up site this year with water front. Lean-to isn't required but an outhouse is a nice luxury! We'll be camping in a couple weeks (July 9-12) and have a site reserved as backup but are researching better options. We like being in the water and also kayak and fish but decided against an island site this year. Thanks in advance for any info!

Off the top of my head, I know that there's a couple of waterfront sites at Mason Lake between Indian Lake and Speculator. A couple more at Mountain Pond near Paul Smiths. And one on Middle Pond on the Floodwood Road in the Saranac Lakes Wild Forest.

A lot of car accessible water front sites have been closed over the years, though (I know a bunch were closed at Mason Lake a few years ago). There is good reason for it- waterfront sites tend to be high impact, and are much more so when there is little effort needed to access them. There are also concerns about impacts to the riparian zone (the boundary between land and water) which plays important functions in maintaining water quality and protecting aquatic ecosystems.

The car accessible waterfront sites that are out there also tend to be pretty popular. Even though arriving on Thursday gives you better chances of securing such a site, there is still no guarantee.

If you're willing to camp at a non-waterfront site, then your options increase significantly. In the central Adirondacks, the Moose River Plains alone has 100+ free, first-come, first-serve primitive sites. The western access to the plains is in Inlet, not too far from Raquette Lake. There's a lot more scattered around the park- if you do a forum search, you can find plenty of discussion in the past on the locations of such sites.

Yes you can get a trailer through on Floodwood! The road starts off as paved and then leads to dirt but its wide enough and very few pot holes. Should have no problem there. Other places are Mountain Pond up 30 past Paul Smith's college. Or up near Onchiota there are sites as well! Jones Pond has some but the pot holes are huge! And because the state doesnt charge for these first come first serve campsites there is no money to fix the potholes!

Camping

I don't know if they are still around but there are / were no reserve sites on Little Green Pond near Little Clear Pond (where you access St Regis Pond). You had to get a permit at the Fish Hatchery once you got there however.
