Free Camping Near Old Forge

Hey Guys!

So my girlfriend and I are planning on spending the summer near Old Forge or a surrounding area and were wondering if there are any known places that we could set up our tent and camp for the summer. We plan on working in town somewhere and are trying not to pay rent for a couple of months during the summer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

You can camp in the woods on state land but you have to be 150' from roads, trails, water etc and you can only stay in the same place for 3 days at a time. There are also other rules, you can find out about it on the DEC website. It would be possible to move to a new place every three days but it would be a bit more complicated than just finding a place where someone would let you stay all summer on private land.

Hey Zach,

Thanks for the response! Yeah I figured that was the deal. Just looking for a cheap way to spend the summer in the Adirondaks. We are willing to shell out a little bit of money, but rent prices seem a little high. Do you know anything about the moose river plains camping area? It says 14 days maximum, but could you move your tent every two weeks and be okay? Anyways, Thanks a ton!

You still need a permit in the Plains to remain camped at the same location for more than 3 nights. With a permit, you can stay at the same site for 14 days. After 14 days are up, you'll need to relocate to a new site, and secure a new permit if you plan to stay at the subsequent site for more than 3 nights. The permit should be obtained from the DEC in advance of setting up camp.

The ranger who patrols that area has final say of whether they will issue you a permit or not. I wouldn't be surprised if he/she was hesitant to continue issuing you new permits for an entire summer, since "living on state land" really isn't how primitive camping is supposed to work.

You are looking at probably an hour commute one way from many of the MRP sites to Old Forge. The interior roads are ~15 mph. If it's utility to work in Old Forge, you definitely are better off trying to strike up a friendship with someone local who might let you camp on their land in return for a bit of work.

You can do it but you'll have to move around a bit. When you get your first permit from a Forest Ranger be very courteous and cooperative. If you keep a nice, clean campsite they'd be more inclined to work with you. Also, look for sites that might not be so attractive to other campers as in all fairness they won't let you stay in them consistently.

Why don't you consider working at a campground, even part time, where lodging could be part of the deal? Sounds like a fun summer if you can pull it off.

Here's a link to the state's rules
