Spruce grouse

Remember, the Spruce grouse is PROTECTED in NYS. Can't be hunted.
Hungarian partridge is legal to hunt.

Now all you have to do is be able to tell the difference between the two species when they blast out from between your legs in the thick brush.

My boys counted 40+ newts hiking out from Rock Pond on the Heart Pond trail. I saw a red squirrel, loons, Jerry the mouse, and some toads. Oh yeah, and glimpsed a Crayfish in the shallows in Rock Pond near the lt, unfortunately the boys couldn't find him again.

We were up at Sleeping Beauty Saturday and were hoping to see a Timber Rattler but saw none. Just saw a couple newts and some Blue Jays.

Also, regarding Bald Eagles. I've been on the lookout for them for years, not in the ADKs but Northern Catskills and in and around the Hudson near the Capital Region. Didn't see them in YEARS when lots of others spotted them.

Then, I saw one in the Hoosick Valley going out toward Bennington, which I was a little surprised about initially since it's a relatively small river comparatively. That opened the floodgates, and I've spotted them a few times recently as close as two miles from home in Clifton Park. We saw a pair on the Erie Towpath in the Vischer Ferry Preserve, flying with what looked to be a pretty big adolescent Bald, amazing sight! Then saw one having an argument with a red tailed hawk over the CP Commons, heading up North toward 146a/Eagle Crest.

My older son and I saw one late fall on the Metro North down in the lower Hudson Valley, flying back to his nest.

It's great to see them back!

I wonder why so many newts were hiking out -- did they instinctively sense an upcoming disaster?
