Herbert k. Clark memorial stone ceremony 05/26/2013

We invite you to join the Adirondack Forty-Sixers , the Clark family, and the residents of Saranac Lake to honor Herbert K. Clark by placing a memorial stone to laud his achievement as Adirondack forty-sixer #1 at his gravesite. The ceremony will be at St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Saranac Lake. In case of rain the ceremony will be held at the Cantwell room at the Saranac Lake Free Library. This event will take place on May 26th 2013 at 10:00 a.m. There will be a short ceremony and presentations’ of replica climbing certificates to all the grandchildren and the unveiling of the memorial stone.

The gravesite was visited this past summer and it was noticed that there was nothing on his headstone mentioning his great achievement. Herb and the Marshall brother’s are truly historical figures in New York State and are held in the highest regards by the forty sixer organization. A proposal was presented to the executive committee to purchase a stone to honor Herb at our fall meeting. It was unanimously approved. .

Mayor Clyde Rabideau of Saranac Lake will declare that week Herbert K. Clark week in Saranac Lake. New York State Assemblyman Daniel Stec who’s district includes forty two of the forty six high peaks and Assemblywomen Janet Duprey who’s district includes the other four peaks will also be present. Congressman Bill Owens has confirmred he will be there. Many other guest and dignitaries have also been invited.
We look forward to you attending this event as the Adirondack Forty-Sixers pay tribute to Herbert K. Clark ADK. 46er #1.

directions to Herb Clarks gravesite

It is less than a month till the Herb Clark ceremony. I am hoping for temps of
82 and skies of blue; but we are talking Saranac Lake. The average temp at ten
a.m. for the 26th is about 50 to 60 on a warm day.

Directions to the cemetery:

From Lake Placid follow route 86 into Saranac Lake, take a right at second light
on to Main st. stay left at Y to Broadway , turn left at second light to
Ampersand ave and follow for about 6 tenths a mile. The cemetery is on the right
at the intersection of Ampersand and Forrest Home Road.

From route 3 west from Tupper turn left at the second light and follow the above
directions.

Route 3 east. When coming into Saranac Lake take a right at the second light
on to Broadway and then left at next light to Ampersand ave.

Route 30 north take left at Paul Smiths college intersection on to route 86 then
a right at first light past the hospital on to Ampersand ave.

There is parking in the cemetery; There is limited parking across the street at the soccer field and parking along the road on that side.

.Saranac Lake civic center is 3 tenths of a mile from the cemetery is the with parking for 50+cars.
There are no bathroom facilities at the cemetery. There may be a porta- potty at
the soccer field but no guarantee. Hydes mobile on Broadway will be the closest
place on a Sunday morning.

If you want coffee before the ceremony there is a McDonalds, Dunk ’n’ donuts ,
Subway, Stewarts, Hydes Mobile, DJ’s Rustic Diner and Mc Kenzie’s grill coming
from Lake Placid.
From Tupper there is nothing till you hit the second light coming into town.
Then Stewarts , DJ’s and Hyde Mobile.

From route 30 coming from Paul Smiths nothing unless you go through the light
and Hydes is just down the street.
Route 3 from the east Stewarts , DJ’s and Hydes.

Don’t forget Donnally’s Ice cream after the event on 86 towards Paul Smiths The
best soft ice cream in the world. A different flavor each day.
The ceremony will be less than one hour and it will start at 10 a.m. sharp.

Arrow necktie

I recieved confirmation that Roger Marshall son of George Marshall 46er #2 will attend the memorial ceremony. In his message he said "I hope everyone wears a necktie, as Herb did, probably when he was working." I have always been amazed looking at the picturs of Herb in a tie while hiking. So lets honor Herb by wearing a necktie.
