I encountered one a few years back in my back woods. I usually see Ruffed grouse, I'm pretty sure this was a spruce grouse as I couldn't tell if what the heck this bird wanted, I thought she have been dropped on her head as a chick. After reading up on the spruce grouse behavior I figured that is what it was but couldn't be entirely sure as I didn't have a camera. That was the only time though, have only seen ruffed grouse since. I changed the direction of the walk for the rest of that season so as to leave her be. She was so brave (or friendly) (or mentally challenged).

Spruce grouse are pretty common around here; more so in the Maritimes.

I have been scared pretty well by them..mostly by just missing walking on them. They do play "mentally challenged" pretty well. Once in Ontario in a campground momma and a bunch of chicks (8-10) decided to hang out under my car. Nothing would budge them.

I see and hear ruffed grouse more than spruce though, fortunately, as I really don't need my dog bringing home birds.
