Are fires permitted at Lake Colden campsites?

A small question. Are fires permitted at Lake Colden primitive campsites and other similar places (Avalanche trail, Marcy dam etc)?

Also, I assume they all work on "first come" basis?

Thank you

As others have posted, no, campfires are not permitted at Lake Colden. The reason behind the ban is that back when campfires were still permitted, the high levels of use resulted in the complete denuding of the forest understory around each campsite. All of the dead and downed wood had been consumed, and illegal tree cutting had become a rampant and major problem throughout the Eastern High Peaks (including Lake Colden, Marcy Dam, and Johns Brook).

In the nearly 20 years since it was implemented, the fire ban has resulted in tremendous improvement to campsites in this area- many of the sites now actually have vegetative screening that simply didn't exist 20 years ago. This allows more groups to enjoy places like Lake Colden without the area "feeling" as crowded, as most of the sites aren't visible from each other. Vegetative screening also cuts down on noise as well.

It's also worth pointing out that the ban on campfires includes wood burning stoves for cooking, such as twig burners.

EDIT: Since you're asking about regulations for that area, also make sure that you're aware of the requirement to possess and use a bear canister for food storage at Lake Colden. Bear hangs do not work in that area.
