Mud Season -> Black Fly Season

Ok, got a nice email from Adirondack Mountain Club announcing that 'Mud Season' has started and requesting we stay below 3k feet. Happy to comply.

Nice video here about it

My question: Do mud and black fly season often overlap? I understand no one has a weather crystal ball but in general terms it will help with planning our next trip (peak, hike or canoe). Or is there often a sweet spot between the two?

Thank you

In my experience ... maybe?

It depends on where and weather and timing, etc. In my CNY neck of the woods, black flies are already out and mildly swarming (Altmar as well last Saturday). Last year, I was in the ADKs the weekend after Mother's day and didn't see but a couple. A few years ago, we went out the last weekend of June and had so many deerflies and mosquitoes, I thought I'd need a blood transfusion, we then moved 20 miles and didn't see a single biting insect.

Unfortunately, no one can predict what the bugs will be like wherever you go other than that there will probably be biting insects in the ADKs from mid-May through July.

Interesting. DEC hasn't issued their advisory yet so it seems odd that ADK would do so independently. Perhaps the DEC release is imminent.

The article on ADK's site is from Apr 14, 2016 and links to a video from May 14, 2015 so at least from their website it's not clear that they've announced the start of mud season 2017.

I was in the Cranberry Lake region on Friday and a few of the bugs were out and about already. Nothing to bad and as long as I stayed moving it was fine. So I assume it will start, at least there, very soon.

There should be a week or so sweet spot at the end of May. I am in Maine and we have mud season now.. It ends in Mid May as far as ATVs go so obviously it isn't ADK hiking trails. ATVs are banned as they can chew up the trails fierce during mud season
Blackflies come out mid May but swarm and do not bite till Memorial Day. Only the girls bite..

I was in the Pharaoh Lakes Wilderness last weekend and didn't see any black flies. It's been my experience that they really start to hammer you during the latter part of May.
