Lake Trout

Hit one of my favorite lakes yesterday and caught 2 fat ones that were about 26 or 27 inches--didn't measure them and released quickly. Marked some good sized bait balls with larger marks above them. One of my fish came as I passed through the bait ball. Both fish caught in @30 feet of water. Water temp 55 degrees surface. Missed 3 other fish. Also caught a really nice smallie. All fish caught on a jig that I tie to imitate smelt. Basically white with a blue/purple back with plenty of flash on the sides. It was a miserable time on the lake with gusty wind and driving rain at times so I only fished 2 hours. Left the cell phone in the truck so no pictures. :-( FWIW, I fish the jig by casting it behind the boat as far as it will go and then jig it as I troll. If I figure out what depth the fish are at, I follow that contour line and let the jig bounce the bottom behind the boat. Works like a charm for me. Its getting so I hardly use anything else.

Congrats on a successful outing. Lake trout are one of those fish I've not been able to figure out yet. To bad about the pictures, sounds like they were pretty nice fish. Some good info you provided as well.

If I were only allowed one type of lure it would be a jig.

Nice report EC!! Glad you had a great day out on the lake! You probably would've caught more if the conditions weren't so rough.
