Stony Pond - 12/26/17

We snowshoed into Stony Pond from 28N. We were the first group since the new snow. Trail conditions were very good. Just a few downed trees to step over/duck under and a few wet spots in the trail to navigate around. It was very quiet at the pond. I was surprised when we reached the pond and there was a picnic table, but no lean-to! It was moved back into the woods since the last time I had been there. Trailhead was plowed with plenty of room to park off of the road.

Thanks for the trailhead info!

I haven't been back to Stony Pond in years. It's a great snowshoe trip. Too bad the lean-to got moved back into the woods, it was on a great spot.

Does the trail still cross a beaver dam about halfway to the pond?

Stony pond is a great xc ski too and not difficult. The trail gets regular use and parking on 28N normally plowed. One can make a thru trip to Irishtown, but this is more difficult. It exits near yurts recently mentioned in another thread. Often short icy flow at SE access.

We did not cross a beaver dam on the way to the pond. There are a couple of large snowmobile bridges along the way. One is probably where you crossed on a beaver dam.

Nice photos, thanks for sharing!
Many great memories at Stony Pond, and many not-so-great memories of carrying out lots of trash left behind in the lean-to. Kinda makes me wonder why rebuild a new lean-to further back in the woods, as opposed to just removing the lean-to all together and keeping the scenic campsite as a designated tent site instead...?

I was just in there on 12/2 for the first time in awhile. I went in from Irishtown. Just a dusting of snow at that time. It was my 1st time to see the new lean-to location.
