Fish Pond esker

On the nine carries route yesterday, one of the highlights was the esker part of the portage to Ochre pond. We spent most of the previous day watching 2 inches of rain come down while sitting in the north lean-to on Fish. We got up early and headed up the esker. We walked along under the white pines and hemlock. There were a dozen different wildflowers and even more mushrooms. Tremendous ecosystem on that ridge. Sorry we missed the lady slipper orchids by a couple weeks, although we missed the black flies too. We did linger a bit, even though we were ready to get the 1.2 mile carry behind us.

There are more orchid out there then Lady Slippers. We saw Board Leaf Helleborine on the Allagash a couple weeks ago and you should also see Long Bracted Green Orchids this time of year.

Thanks for the heads up, off there on Friday to start the 9 carries. First time for me and my friend. I just can't seem to get my pack weight under 30lbs

None of my pictures from that gray day came out very well. I have been able to identify the following...lady slipper orchids, bunch berry, wood sorrel, purple trillium, whorled wood aster, foamflower, partridge berry, dwarf rattlesnake plantain, blue flag Iris by the water with pitcher plants and sundews. I would love to spend more time on that esker exploring...with a good camera.
