Do compasses die?
OK - I admit...while there was a time I considered myself proficient with map and compass, it's been way too long, and my skill set has needed some refreshing. And so, courtesy of the Boy Scouts, I was able to do so last weekend. But - I had purchased what I thought was a good compass, only to find out that North happened to be any direction I pointed to...the needle seems stuck in the case, and does not point north (unless, like a broken clock, I just happen to be facing north). It is a Brunton 8099 Eclipse...was wondering a) is it dead? b) is it fixable? c) do I just scrap it and get a new compass?
Thanks to the experts out there... |

Brunton has a no questions asked lifetime warrantee on a lot of their stuff, and I've used it in the past with good results, (SVEA 123) but they do have a "navigational instruments" clause that says they will fix it, but it'll cost you for repairs. Might be worth a shot fixing it though.
*Brunton is committed to making the most reliable and accurate navigation instruments on the planet. Due to the technical, precision and professional nature of this product, it cannot be guaranteed under the U-Proof guarantee. As durable precision instruments that undergo constant and often rigorous use in the field, in order to maintain their accuracy and integrity, they simply need to be fixed up from time to time; just as you would tune your car or bike. Brunton offers full repair and refurbishment facilities for most models. We appreciate your kind understanding. |

With all the metal in you it is amazing that all your compasses don't malfunction

I'm not familiar with that compass but is it possible the needle was locked in place on purpose? I had a compass years ago where you could lock the needle to prevent it from swinging around when it wasn't in use. I'm wondering if something like that might not be the culprit? Just curious...
That's all for now. Take care and until next time...be well. snapper |
