Leader for trout

I was wondering what your go to length of leaded for brookies are? I always thought 15-18 inches . This week I fished with a guy who is new to pond fishing and his leader was only 8... he did better than I did! I would post a picture but not sure how to!

I've seen both used and both successful. This is a topic of great debate, along with whether to impale an entire Night crawler, or just use enough to cover the hook. Many discussions of great import, although certainly nothing to start a war over, like which end of the egg should be broken first!

For trolling 18 inches. For fly fishing up to 20 feet. When I used to troll I found that speed and depth were the most important factors.

I knew there was some debate about lbs length behind a wobbler ... but I never really heard many people say that shorter it better!
