  • 5 days trip advise

New to this forum, and looking for a trip advise.
We are planing to go to Adirondack for a 5 days canoe trip in late July and would appreciate a route suggestion.
About us: we don't mind portages, but not big fans of rapids. We would realy
like a trip with as much solitude as possible even if it requires few extra carry on. Any good ideas?

    Thanks,
    SVB

Little Tupper, Rock , Hardigan, Shingle Shanty, Lila, Harrington Brook, Lows and exit before the Bog River.

    You'll need 2 cars or a shuttle

Paddle up the oswegotchi, go up the outlet of the "five ponds" untill you cant paddle anymore then hit the trail and carry to one of the lean-tos on the "five ponds". Then bushwhack over the esker and paddle/drag and beaverdam hop your way to wolf pond, paddle to the end of wolf pond and carry to sand lake. Then you paddle sand and down the outlet. The entire outlet is doable with a boat but tough in spots IMO it easier to take out at the first rappids and carry back to the bear pond road. This requires two vehicles. Also its not for the inexperienced as its a pretty tough trip.

I will second yellowcanoes suggestion. Most (all?) of the portage trails along that route should be well marked. If you're up for furthering the challenge, from Lows you can carry to Big Deer Pond, and then carry again from there to the Oswegatchie Headwaters and float downstream on the Oswegatchie.

            Decided then,
we will take the route suggested by yellowcanoe.

Any thoughts/advice on the availability of campsites along this route?

If you get an early enough start, stay a night on Rock Pond. Spend at least another another night on Lake Lila, and be sure to climb Mt. Frederica too. I saw a very secluded site on Clear Pond, between Harrington Pond and Bog Lake. Almost any site on Lows is nice, some very sheltered sites on Grass Pond. Oh, and be sure to scramble up Grass Pond Mt and Hitchins Ridge. And poke around the old Lows complex, lots of history there, just sinking into the forest floor.

Here is a link to some photos from a Lila to Lows trip...

Reading up on ideas and had to ask this question here also.

Can you paddle Shingle Shanty Brook now? Read previous posts and wasn't to sure the outcome. thanks Just thought about paddling it from Lake Lila and back as a day trip.

Even though the case is in its final appeal, it should be legal to paddle all the way to Mud Lake/Lilypad Pond.

Oops, I forgot to answer your other question about Beaver River and Nehasane Lake...that's a big negatory. Privately owned, no public access, not yet determined to be navigable in fact.

Thank you Stripperguy! I had asked the same question on a previous thread also. Plan to go next week.
