CL50 "secret" campsite

There is a seemingly little known public campsite along the Cranberry Lake 50 on South Shore Rd in Wanakena. It is between the two trail heads on that road (further down South Shore from the CL50 trail head).

It has three tent sites and a lean-to site, each with a fire pit and chopped wood. There is also one of the nicest two seat latrines you will ever see. The lean-to was moved from Portaferry Boy Scout Camp after it was closed.

There is a green metal gate at the entrance.

As in overused or just that it was published here?

Be careful what you wish for. A rarely used lean-to is rare, especially one that is located not too far from a road.

A valid point (and I assume dundee's point as well), but at the same time if a quarter of the people who use it buy something at Otto's or a meal at the Pine Cone... a microcosm of the issues facing the ADK in general I guess.

tecnically Town officials would like it to be called "The Wanakena Picnic Area" though camping is allowed. A great site indeed.

There had been problems in the past with campers/RVs squating there... and the boulders were rolled in to prevent that... recently, a few of those boulders were moved aside to aid in the relocation/reconstruction of the lean-to, thus the green gate.

Where is it on the road? I will have to find it at night. I'm assuming the trailhead is the tennis courts so how far from the courts and which side of the road?

It is between the two trailheads for the high falls loop. It is on the same side of the road as the tennis courts (which is the first trialhead).
