Black flies? Phelps, Tabletop, Giant, Cascade, Algonquin?

Hi everyone!

I am taking a friend on his first high peak this weekend 6/24 or 6/25. We want to avoid black flies, if possible. Can anyone tell me where they are/aren't currently? We are looking at climbing one of these: Phelps, Tabletop, Giant, Cascade, or Algonquin.

Thanks so much!

Jenna

You'll be hard-pressed to find any High Peak in June lacking black flies.

Their presence is influenced by several factors but a strong breeze is usually best at preventing them from finding you.

Last Saturday they were virtually non-existent atop Indian Head and Nippletop whereas a very short distance away, on Dial, they were insufferable. I have a few itchy welts to prove they're out there.

All this to say, you are likely to encounter them so prepare yourself accordingly (repellent, head nets, etc).

Today on Wright, Algonquin, and Iroquois I didn't have any problem with them. I saw a woman with a headnet and couldn't understand why she was wearing it. I got one BF bite in the Loj parking lot.

There were enough today on Nun-da-gao Ridge and Hurricane to be bothersome, but not insufferable.

Black flies are still out, not as bad as last week, but it is that time of year again where lots of mosquitoes are now also mixed in. Deer flies & horse flies are also starting to return as well, and they hurt much worse than black flies.
Best of luck to you, hooray bug season!

Winter, No bugs and a lot less people.

That said a good breeze is an ally and the blackflies are not out after dark, 2'nd shift is for the mosquitoes. And the deer flies are starting to ramp up.

The black flies don't bother me near as much as some other people, my wife says it's because I'm a bitter old man.

Black Flies

Just did Rocky Peak Ridge from rte9. Black flies terrible around Lake Louise, otherwise bearable.

In the words of an old guide, "they only take a little bit", what's the ruckus?

Not so much what they take but what they leave behind.
