For those interested - a trip report of yesterday's enjoyable exploration of the Trap Dike and new slide:

Great photos! Thanks.

When the new slide was fresh in 2012, there was a "mud barrier" about 2/3 of the way up, where there was a small level band across the slide that was very muddy. Is that still there? Or has it gotten cleaned up by the weather since then?

There is indeed a small mushy/muddy band of soil of the sort you describe very near the top (perhaps less than 100 vertical feet from the top of the slide). I'd call it at more like 7/8ths of the way up rather than 2/3rds of the way up. Below that is all clean rock.

It required only one or two careful steps to climb through.

Wow I'm glad i saw this! I'll have to do this when I go in August. How far would you say it is from the base of the trapdike at Avalanche Lake to the summit?

It's only about 1/2 mile on the map, but it's about a 2,000' climb in that 1/2 mile so it seems like a lot more. Plus you're doing some hand -over- hand climbing which uses more energy, especially when you have to do a vertical climb up one of the waterfalls.

Last time I did the Dike, I took 3 hours to go from my tentsite at Lake Golden to the summit. You can certainly go faster, but I stop and look at things, take photos and I go safe and slow up the waterfall; it can be a difficult section.

The "Nitty Gritty Dirt Band" (circa 2013).

If you're eagle-eyed, you can spot the Dirt Band when viewing Colden from Marcy Dam.

Thank you so much. I have never seen a better picture journey. This should be mandatory viewing for anyone trying the Dike for the first time. What were you carrying in your packs and about what did they weigh?
