Mt. Severance Country Store

Just found out that the Mt. Severance Country Store in Schroon Lake went out of business, and thought I'd pass it along. Very sorry to hear this news, been stopping there for decades while visiting the nearby region.

Really? I was just there last week. They had the best doughnuts... not that I need any doughnuts. I hope it's a temporary shutdown. Do you have any more info on what happened?

I'll pass by and take another look.

The scuttlebutt on the Schroon Lake Facebook group (thread has since been deleted) was that locals were boycotting the place because the new(ish) owners fired a local, long-time employee after accusing her of theft.

Not sure if the closing is temporary, permanent, if they're putting the place up for sale or what. I clicked on the post comments because I too was curious what had happened, but it was just a lot of sniping back and forth.

I'm not aware of any details.
A friend of mine was there yesterday and said to me that it was closed for good and out of business.

That's really too bad!
Along with good doughnuts, they had excellent sandwiches, coffee, and chili!
Now I guess I'll have to go back to Zoowarts.

Well, by golly, there's as good a reason as any!

Assuming, of course, that it is true. It seems like, perhaps, the locals thought it was not?

I drove by yesterday. There's a hand written sign on the door that says "Closed for good",
even though merchandise appears to still be on the shelves...

Missed this thread originally. This is unfortunate- they had great sandwiches. It's not really surprising, though- the location is less than ideal. People getting off at exit 28 just stop at the Sunoco for gas and food, while people in the village of Schroon Lake go to the Stewart's for the same. While the Mt. Severance Country Store always looked like it was doing OK in terms of business, it was never crowded like the other convenience stores in the area are on a busy summer weekend.

Some of that merchandise looked like it had been on the shelves for years...

Reopened for business

I drove by the other day and noticed that 'Mt. Severance Country Store' is once again open for business.

Glad to see that. We stopped in the weekend of September 17 -18 and they said they had been open for about two weeks. It has been a regular stop for us for 35 years.

The Crossroads is another great country store. It is located at Northway exit 25. Maps, guidebooks, outdoor gear, good food, gas, and a great beer selection. I prefer it to the near-by Stewarts. Support the local guys. Recommended.

I'll attest to that. The West family - John, Mike & Nate - are great people and personal friends. Ron Robert used to hang around there too before he passed a few years ago. What an Adirondack character he was.

There's an article in the Sun Community News about the new owner and the services they're providing today:
