Canada to re-open land border to vaccinated Americans 8/9

https://buffalonews.com/news/local/c...7a0af8897.html

Good news for Americans wanting to cross into Ontario, Quebec, and other parts of Canada. Key section from the linked article:

Quote:

To be eligible to enter Canada, American citizens and permanent residents must have received the full series of an approved vaccine – or combination of vaccines – at least 14 days prior to entering Canada, the Canadian government said in documents detailing the border reopening.

The approved vaccines are those manufactured by Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca.

Americans traveling to Canada will also have to:

• Provide Covid-19-related information electronically through Canada's ArriveCAN app or web portal, including proof of vaccination prior to arrival in Canada.

Take a Covid-19 test before arrival.

• Show no symptoms of Covid-19.

• Have a paper or digital copy of their vaccination card.
Some politicians including Chuck Schumer are now calling for the U.S. to reciprocate:

Quote:

Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, who has pressed the Canadian ambassador to the U.S. and two U.S. cabinet secretaries on the border issue, also said the Canadian move should prompt the U.S. to act.

“Canada’s policy change is long overdue and has the potential to be terrific news for thousands who have loved ones, property or commercial interests across the border," said Schumer, a New York Democrat. "The United States must now immediately follow suit, make our policy uniform and further energize New York’s recovery."

An important detail was added to the Buffalo News article: Only one test will be required, not two as previously speculated:

Quote:

Canada had previously required returning Canadians to pay for a second Covid test upon arrival, but the government documents indicate that will no longer be the case and would not apply to Americans.

Instead, Canada will randomly test people arriving via the land borders or by air. There will be no charge for those tests.

Some of my walleye fishing buddies are quite happy about this.

I've been looking for test options. Not finding many near me that I can be sure will deliver results in under 3 days. Don't put off researching this if planning to cross.

I wonder how busy the High Peaks will be this fall with our friends to the North.

Possibly not since Biden announced today US is not opening to non-essential Canadian travelers. Extended closure to August 21. (I'm thinking that will change before August 21.)

November 8th was just announced on WTEN (out of Albany) - everything had just been saying early November, so this is more specific.

Gets even better! The CDC just announced we mixed-vaxxers, millions of us, can now cross into the U.S. too, all starting Nov 8th.

This is good news. This comes after an absurdly long political and "image messaging" battle; for a very long time this has not been about public health.

I am glad that our Canadian friends will be able to visit here again. Welcome!
