Alabama Swamps (Western New York)

Located between the Buffalo and Rochester metro areas, the Alabama Swamps include a 10,000+ acre national wildlife refuge (Iroquois NWR) and multiple state wildlife management areas (Tonawanda, John White, and Oak Orchard WMAs). More than 250 species of birds have been recorded here including bald eagles.

Having spent time here the past four months, this has been one of my go-to spots for regional recreation during the coronavirus outbreak. The birdwatching and wildlife viewing opportunities are exceptional.

Here are some photos from this year's outings. More photos can be seen on my hiking photoblog.

Thanks guys! I just added a new hike to my photoblog if you want to check it out sometime over the long weekend. No wildlife this time, but some interesting scenery with an 80-foot waterfall at the end.

That turtle on top looked like it was ready to dive into the water at any moment, didn't it? Most of the turtles I saw quickly went into the water as soon as they saw me coming, but this one continued balancing on top of its friend.

Enjoy the holiday weekend everyone!
