High Falls Loop & Cat

Did a loooong day hike with a boyscout troop on Tuesday--the loop plus the short High Falls and Cat Mountain branch trails. The trails were all very well marked except for one small bit. It was very boggy in a number of places--there were maybe 5 ponds where you had to walk across beaver dams. Be sure to bring spare socks! There is one place where you have to walk a log (about 50 feet long) across a deep bog (water at one point at least 5 feet deep I'd say. The log is quite wide and flat over the deep water, then gets thinner. Someone had cut some long poles to use for stabilization. All scouts and clutzy mom made it across safely. If coming from the direction where you do the High Falls trail before Cat mountain, this pond is about a mile out from High Falls. The trail on the far side is a little hard to find--follow the pink ties to the left a short way along the shore of the pond until you pick up the trail markers again.

The worst part of the hike--horrendous mosquitos! In the future, I will stick to higher peaks for June, and wait on a hike like this until at least August or September when it's drier! Oh, and of course, doing it as at least a 2 day backpack would have been way more fun!

The best parts: High Falls was very pretty and not too buggy out on the rocks at the top of the falls. The boys really liked the adventure of walking on beaver dams and crossing the log. View from Cat was very nice.
