![]() Going to be camping at Marcy Dam in the near future with my 2 kids and a dog - any tips would be appreciated.
The plan is to hike in - set up camp and sleep overnight. Ascend Marcy the next day and then sleep there again, then hike back out. |

Lots of regulations may apply depending on exactly what you are doing, but be sure to read the sections covering dogs in:
https://govt.westlaw.com/nycrr/Docum...ta=(sc.Default) You probably already know that approved bear resistant canisters are mandatory for all food storage (including dog food).

Yes, we have the bear canister. It'll be a challenge getting all our food in it. Thanks for the document - I just read through it and one thing I hadn't thought of was bringing the rabies certificate, so it was definitely helpful!

Keep in mind that you'll also need to fit your trash and fragrant toiletries (toothpaste, etc.) in the bear canister. If yours is not big enough, I believe you can rent a smaller Bare Boxer canister at The Mountaineer in Keene Valley to hold the overflow. It's like a mini version of the Garcia can. I own one and have used it many times in the High Peaks. Holds 3 days food if packed efficiently. See details at: https://www.bareboxer.com/products.htm
Try repackaging your food in zip loc bags to minimize bulk. |
